They also showed higher expression of both hTERT and hTR genes — the two core components of the telomerase enzyme.

A 3-month longitudinal study showed that while control subjects’ telomere length significantly decreased over the study period, meditators’ telomere length was maintained. Meditation appears to buffer against the relentless telomere erosion that comes with daily life.

And a comprehensive 2025 review in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews on advanced meditation and the autonomic nervous system confirmed that experienced meditators achieve distinct cortical profiles and ANS regulation patterns associated with enhanced well-being — effects that become more pronounced with practice.

This isn’t fringe science. This is the intersection of psychoneuroimmunology and geroscience, and it’s telling us something we should have been listening to all along: your nervous system state is a longevity intervention.
